Thank You to Our Florists

We would like to take this opportunity to extend a heartfelt thank you to our florists worldwide. Each and every florist, after completing their training, is truly an artist. We owe the beautifully arranged plants to the florist, who presents them in an artistic manner.

Why Art, You Ask?

We want to share with you in this post that the profession of a florist is far from monotonous and cannot be compared to office work. Being a florist is more than just selling plants; it is the art of arranging plants and presenting them attractively.

The Training to Become a Florist

Floristry is a craft or flower art that is learned through training and further education. The training to become a florist is therefore about mastering an ancient art.

It is an art because bouquets are made from natural cut flowers (usually) and you need to learn different types of arrangements.

Every customer in the flower shop is a new challenge, every order is a test of one’s skill and creativity.

Previously known as flower binding, today the term floristry is widely recognized and well known.

What Do You Learn During Training?

The training to become a florist is similarly structured in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland and is one of the professions that urgently needs new florists who love plant care and flowers. The training typically lasts about three years and involves a dual education system.

What Does Dual Education Mean?

A dual education system is the most common type of training in Germany, combining theoretical content in the form of school and studies with practical skills learned in the respective field.

In a flower shop, you are usually involved in multiple areas rather than just one. Service for customers begins as soon as the first contact is made.

What Skills Are Required?

Prior knowledge is desirable, but during your training, you will learn both sales and other related tasks. You will learn how to bind bouquets, wreaths, arrangements, and cut flower arrangements, and how to be creative for people searching for the perfect gift for Valentine's Day. It is important to pay attention to colors and commercial aspects in bouquet design.

You will also learn selling and calculating for creating bouquets for the shop window and customers. Arrangements, cut flower arrangements, and other types of art must be well-calculated to meet both customer and business needs.

Keep in mind that the training and later work in the shop are mainly standing jobs, so you should be comfortable standing in a flower shop.

Is It Still Worth Becoming a Florist?

Whether it is worth it for you in the end is something you must decide yourself. It is best to look for flower shops where you could find an apprenticeship and what your salary would be. You can find such companies here. We also recommend doing a trial day to get an impression of the daily routine and assess if you would like to work as a florist.

If your interest is piqued, choose a suitable apprenticeship position; there are really many options! Vocational school runs parallel to the training in the company, so the time at vocational school also takes about 3 years.

What Does a Florist Do?

Florists are needed wherever flowers are used, and the range is vast. You may wonder what a florist does? Simply put, you can do almost anything you want with it!

From wholesale to garden centers to funeral homes, nurseries, or even your own company. In addition to the many listed options, there are twice as many choices when you consider that flower care also requires florists. You may have heard of some companies looking for apprentices, as trades are currently in high demand.

If you enjoyed the training in the shop but are not interested in creatively designing orders, you can also use your knowledge in the background. A degree in business administration or similar fields fits well with such career groups!

Sales is also an important aspect of designing and caring for wreaths and flowers.

What School Graduation Do I Need?

The training requires a secondary school diploma, and you earn about 600 Euros in the first year, about 700 Euros in the second year, and 750 Euros in the third year. The size of the flower shop and the type of company, such as e.K. or GmbH, play a significant role in the salary. Floristry is an art with flowers, and we hope to convince you of the florist profession or spark your interest. It is often a forgotten profession but truly beautiful. Moreover, you will never forget an occasion, as most customers come to the flower shop for occasions.

Florist Basics

Basics that florists should know, ideally even before applying, include proper handling of flowers; however, you will learn this during the training.

Even in 2022, people come into the shop for advice, and tips like "Don’t place flowers next to fruit" are invaluable to customers! Many people still place flowers in direct sunlight or do not cut them, regardless of how many guides are written.
