Thanks to our florist
We would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to our florists around the world for the attention we attract with our blog and beyond. After training as a florist, every florist is a true artist. We owe the florists the wonderfully arranged plants that they artistically stage. Why art, you ask?
Well, that's what we want to tell you in this article, because the job of a florist is anything but monotonous, not to be compared with an office job. Being a florist is more than just selling plants, it is the art of designing plants and presenting them as attractively as possible.
Training to become a florist
Floristry is acraft or floral art that is learnt in the course of training and further education. Training to become a florist is therefore learning an ancient art.
It is an art because bouquets are created from natural cut flowers (as a rule) and you have to learn different ways of arranging them.
Every customer in the flower shop is a new challenge, every order a test of your skills and creativity.
Formerly called floristry, today the term floristry is commonplace and well known to people.
What do you learn during your training?
Training to become a florist has a similar structure in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and is one of the professions that urgently needs young florists who love caring for plants and flowers. Firstly, it should be noted that the apprenticeship lasts around three years and you have to complete a dual training programme.
What does dual training mean?
Dual training is the best-known type of training in Germany, which combines theoretical content in the form of school and university with the practical skills that you learn in the respective field.
In a florist's shop, however, you usually don't just work in one area, but have several tasks to do. For example, customer service begins as soon as the first contact has been made.
What do I need to know?
Previous knowledge is of course desirable, but during your training you will learn both sales and the other activities that go with it. Content such as tying bouquets, wreaths, flower arrangements, cut flower arrangements as well as getting creative for people who are in the shop looking for the perfect gift for Valentine's Day. Of course, this also requires you to pay attention to colours and commercial aspects when designing bouquets.
You will be responsible for selling and calculating your own bouquets for the shop window and for customers in the shop. Flower arrangements, cut flower arrangements and all other types of art must be well calculated so that the company fulfils both its customers' and its own economic interests.
Remember that the training and later work in the shop is mainly standing, so you should have no problem standing in the flower shop.
Is it still worth becoming a florist now?
You have to decide for yourself whether it's worth it in the end, the best thing to do is to look for the florist shops where you could find an apprenticeship and what your salary would be. You can find one such companyhere. We would also recommend that you spend a day as an intern so that you can get an impression of the daily routine and assess for yourself whether it suits you and whether you would like to work as a florist.
If you are interested, choose a suitable apprenticeship - there really is a lot to choose from! Vocational school runs in parallel to the training in the company, so the time at vocational school also lasts around 3 years.
What do you do as a florist
Florists are interesting wherever flowers are used, and the choice is huge. You're probably wondering what does a florist do? Quite simply, you can do almost anything you want!
From wholesale to garden centres to funeral homes, nurseries or even your own company. In addition to the many possibilities listed above, there are twice as many options when you consider that florists are also needed to care for the flowers. You have probably heard from one company or another that they are looking for trainees, as skilled trades are currently in high demand among companies.
If you enjoyed your training at the company, but don't feel like creatively designing the orders, you can also use your knowledge in the background at work. A degree in business administration or similar is a good fit for this type of job!
Selling is also one of the most important aspects of designing and caring for the wreaths and flowers.
What school-leaving qualification do I need?
The apprenticeship requires a secondary school leaving certificate and you earn approx. 600 euros in the first year, approx. 700 euros in the second and 750 euros in the third year. Of course, the size of the flower shop plays an enormous role, and the type of company, such as a limited company or a limited liability company, also plays a role in the salary. Floristry is an art with flowers and we hope to be able to convince you of the profession of florist or to encourage your interest. It is a mostly forgotten profession, but one that is truly beautiful. Moreover, you will never forget an occasion, as most customers come to the flower shop on special occasions.
Basics from the florist
The basics that florists should know, even before applying, is the correct handling of flowers, but if necessary you will learn this during your training.
Even in 2022, people will still come into the shop for advice, and tips such as "Don't put the flowers next to fruit" are worth their weight in gold for the customer! This is because many actually place the flowers in direct sunlight or don't cut them, no matter how many guides are written.
